Trail Guide
Top-rated hiking and mountain biking spots across Pennsylvania's wildest backcountry.
Buzzard Swamp Trail System
A network of interconnected trails winding through wetlands and hardwood forest in the Allegheny National Forest. Prime birding territory — over 200 species documented. The trails range from flat boardwalk sections over open marshes to gentle ridgeline walks through towering oaks.
Minister Creek Trail
One of the most beloved backpacking loops in the Allegheny National Forest. Follows Minister Creek through a deep, old-growth hemlock gorge before climbing to scenic overlooks. Primitive camping at designated sites along the route makes this a perfect overnight.

Pine Creek Gorge Trail
Often called 'Pennsylvania's Grand Canyon,' Pine Creek Gorge drops over 1,000 feet from the plateau above. The trail runs alongside the creek through a stunning gorge carved by glacial meltwater. Watch for bald eagles soaring the thermals above the canyon walls.

Trails at Jakes Rocks
Pennsylvania's 2024 Trail of the Year and one of the finest purpose-built mountain bike systems in the entire northeast. The Trails at Jakes Rocks is a 35-mile natural surface stacked-loop system designed by IMBA Trail Solutions and located in the Allegheny National Forest. From beginner-friendly flow trails to technical boulder gardens and jump lines, this system is built for every skill level. The iconic Jakes Rocks Overlook rewards riders with sweeping views over the Allegheny Reservoir — one of the most stunning vista payoffs in PA Wilds riding. Nearby, families can enjoy picnic areas, the Kinzua Beach swimming area, boat launches on the Allegheny Reservoir, and the historic Kinzua Bridge State Park — making it a perfect multi-day destination for the whole crew.

Knox & Kane Rail Trail
One of Pennsylvania's premier rail trails, the Knox & Kane stretches nearly 74 scenic miles through the heart of the PA Wilds — from Kinzua Bridge State Park in McKean County all the way south to Clarion Junction. Built on a historic railroad grade, the trail offers a crushed limestone surface with gentle grades ideal for all skill levels. Pedal through dense Allegheny National Forest, cross pristine creek valleys, and pass through quiet small towns that feel like they haven't changed in decades. The trail is still being completed in sections, with new miles opening regularly.

North Country Trail
The North Country National Scenic Trail is the longest hiking trail in the United States, stretching over 4,800 miles from New York to North Dakota — and its most celebrated stretch runs right through the heart of the Allegheny National Forest. Traversing remote ridgelines, old-growth hemlock hollows, and pristine creek valleys, the NCT through Pennsylvania offers a true backcountry experience. Hikers can tackle short day sections or string together multi-day expeditions deep into the ANF. This is quiet, unhurried wilderness at its finest.
